Mutual Funds

A basket of investments that are professionally managed and follow specific investment rules set out by the fund’s prospectus. It can be conservatively invested in money markets and bonds or more aggressively invested in stocks of US and foreign companies.

Investors should be aware that there are risks inherent in all investments, such as fluctuations in investment principal. This is particularly true for mutual funds.

Stocks and Bonds

Individual securities issued by corporations and governments. Stocks are an ownership in the corporation. Bonds are loans made to corporations and governments and typically pay interest to the investor.

Market-Linked CDs

A certificate of deposit that is linked to the performance of a specific market index. They typically have guarantees not to lose money if held to maturity and can have FDIC insurance up to applicable limits.MLCDs are not appropriate for all depositors including clients needing a guaranteed interest payment or seeking full participation in the stock market.

Annuities

Are long-term investments issued by insurance companies that are designed for retirement purposes, are tax deferred and can offer guarantees. Guarantees are based upon the full faith, credit and claims paying ability of the issuing insurance company. Variable annuities are invested in separate accounts that hold stocks and bonds. Indexed annuities will not lose money if the stocks fall in value and can earn interest based on an underlying index, like the S&P 500. Fixed annuities offer a stated interest rate for a specific period of time, typically 3-10 years.

Unit Investment Trust

Is a basket of stocks and/or bonds that is unmanaged and designed to be held for a specific period of time, typically from 12 months to as long as 25 years. The value of the units of a trust will fluctuate with the value of the underlying securities.

Managed Accounts

Accounts with ongoing management fees that are actively managed based on the investor’s risk tolerance and objectives. The manager can use mutual funds, individual stocks and bonds, exchange traded funds and other investment types as part of a managed portfolio.
